Papers relating to explorations in the Torres Strait, Papua and New Guinea [manuscript]. 1872-1900.

Diaries of voyages made to Torres Strait and Papua New Guinea, 1872-1877. These include: the voyage of the 1872 New Guinea Prospecting Expedition in the "Maria", which sank of Hinchinbrook Island with great loss of life; William Macleay's 1875 "Chevert" expedition; and the 1876 expedition to the Fly River led by the Italian naturalist Luigi D'Albertis in the "Neva". Companions on Hargrave's land exploration in Papua included the missionary William George Lawes and the Tasmanian naturalist W.F. Pettard. The papers also include: Hargrave's 1876 manuscript map of the Fly River, annotated publications relating to New Guinea, 1877-1900; photographs by Charles Bayliss of Hargrave's flying machine models, 1884-1889; and drawings of sailing boats, 1897. The Museum also holds objects relating to Hargrave's travels including a fishing hook which he made from a nail on Hinchinbrook Island, a sailmaker's palm, a compass and a sea chest.
